Listen to: Streakiness can be Deceptive.

Suppose you flip a coin 100 times, and partway through you get seven heads in a row, or seven tails. What would you think? Seven in a row! If you’re like most people, you’d think that the streak was unusual:, you were incredibly lucky, or maybe the coin wasn’t random.

In fact, a truly random coin will show a streak of seven at least half the time. It’s not unusual at all.

What’s going on? We tend to think that randomness means change, that the heads and tails alternate more. But the truth is that to be random, sometimes they do alternate—and sometimes they don’t.

Looking at it another way, When you see six heads in a row, you might think that tails are bound to come up. But the coin has no memory: after six heads, the chance of one more head is still one half. You’re just as likely to continue the streak as you are to end it.

As humans, we’re built to look for patterns. It’s what helped our ancestors keep from being eaten. As a result, we sometimes see patterns when there are none: we run from the lion even when it isn’t there.
